Barbara, recently widowed, still mourns for her husband, Tim. Unexpectedly, a literary agent knocks on her door, and asks Barbara to step in as the widow and promote his book of poetry. At first she is hesitant, but her friends and family insist this is exactly what she needs.
Her first stop is in Elko, Nevada at the Poetry Gathering which is held once-a-year, and attended by thousands of enthusiasts. There, she runs into Miller. In a series of flashbacks, Barbara recalls her arrival to Elko as a NY editor to write about the event where she met Tim and Miller. The two friends and partners soon found themselves in an earnest competition.
Once again, in the backdrop of work-hardened cowhands, spilling out verse, Miller and Barbara are quickly drawn to each other. Her two sons adamantly disapprove.
A family tale of loyalty, love, moving forward, and a dive into the culture of cowboy poetry that thrives to this day.
